Who to Call if Your Central Heating Stops Working in Ipswich this Winter

With the nights getting longer, darker and colder, it’s the time of year when our boilers start to get their annual workout, making sure that our homes keep us warm over winter. And no matter how carefully we manage them and make sure they get their annual service, there’s always the worry that they may break down at the wrong time.

However, before we look at the question of who to call should the worst happen, let’s examine what we can do before the onset of winter to give our boilers the best chance of making it safely through until spring.

Getting your boiler ready for Winter

If your boiler hasn’t been serviced in the last 12 months, that’s the first thing you need to organise. An experienced heating engineer will make comprehensive checks and run various tests to ensure that your boiler is running at its most efficient level.

If you have had an annual service fairly recently, there are a few checks you can make before winter kicks in that should indicate if your heating system is working well. These include:

  • Testing it – most simple of all, just turn it on and see if it’s doing what it should!
  • Checking radiators – are the radiators heating up properly? If not, you may need to bleed them.
  • Checking the water pressure – most boilers should have a dial that shows what the pressure is and what it should be. If it’s beneath its optimum level, you may need to put more water into the system.
  • Buying a carbon monoxide detector – your boiler leaking carbon monoxide is not only a sign that something is wrong with your boiler, it’s also potentially fatal for the occupants.
  • Checking the thermostat – see if the boiler is responding to changes on the thermostat.

If you suspect your boiler may have issues after carrying out the above tests and checks, and you’re not confident that you can remedy the situation yourself, the best thing to do is to get a professional heating engineer in to take a look. You should never take chances when it comes to your boiler!

Who to call if your central heating stops working

Many people are unsure who to call if they have a problem with their boiler. Should you be calling a plumber or a heating engineer?

While some plumbers do work with heating systems and boilers, they tend to deal more generally with water systems and piping – the name derives from the latin word for ‘lead’, as they used to mostly work with lead piping.

Heating engineers, on the other hand – as the name suggests! – deal exclusively with heating systems, so if you’re unsure which to call, it’s always best to go for a heating engineer rather than a plumber.

Whoever you choose, it’s absolutely essential that you check that they are Gas Safe registered.
