Water Heater Leaking: What Should You Do?

When it comes to water heater leaks in your home or office, there is never a convenient time for it to happen: they can happen at any time, regardless of the age of your property or plumbing system. However, while you can never be totally prepared for a water heater leak, you can make sure you know what to do if you are unfortunate enough to experience one. This article will detail some of the key points you need to keep in mind if you do discover a leak to keep damage at a minimum.

Turn Off the Water Supply

If you discover a leak from your water heater or if you suspect you may have one, turning off your water supply can prevent the leak becoming worse. Your water supply can be turned off using the stopcock, which is usually located under the kitchen sink. By turning the stopcock clockwise you can shut off the water supply to your home until the problem is resolved.

Act Swiftly

Acting quickly upon discovery of a leak can save you a lot of time, hassle and money. Even if you believe the leak to be small, shutting off your water supply and contacting a plumber are steps that should be taken as soon as possible. The plumber can inspect your water heater to determine the full extent of the issue, and resolve and repair any problems that have arisen.

Turn Off Your Water Heater

Shut off the power supply to your water heater as soon as you discover or suspect that there is a problem with your system. If you have an electrical water heater, the on/off switch will be located on your circuit board. If you have a gas-powered water heater, however, the switch will simply be located on the system itself.

Arrange Repairs and Replacements

Unless you happen to be one yourself, arrange for a professional plumber to come and inspect your water heater. If you attempt to repair the system yourself, you could end up making the problem worse, which could end up causing more damage to your system and your home and costing you even more money in the long term. A professional plumber will be able to determine exactly what the problem is and the best course of action to take, and the cost of their service is infinitely better value for money than the expenditure you will incur if you incorrectly repair it yourself.
