Having a New Gas Appliance Fitted?

When the time comes that a gas appliance in your home needs to be replaced, the installation of a new one can be quite a complicated process, especially if you don’t know what you should be looking for in the first place. This article will look into the key points that you need to remember when it comes to having a new appliance fitted, and will hopefully make the installation go as smoothly as possible.

The installation of your new appliance is something that should be undertaken by a Gas Safe registered professional. It is a very delicate task, especially as it involves the connection of gas lines, so avoid attempting it yourself. Once you have found a Gas Safe registered professional, obtain a quote from them before they start their work, compare them with a few other companies to ensure you are getting the best value. These quotes should include a description of the work, the materials that will be used and the make, model and location of the appliance.

Check Identification

Make sure you check the ID of the engineer or engineers who arrive to install your new appliance. Every Gas Safe Registered engineer will have a Gas Safe Register ID card with them when they carry out work.

Connections

There are some steps you can take to help the engineers with their job. First, check that there is a live gas supply within 1.5 metres of the location of the new appliance (it must be in the same room). Dual fuel cookers also require an electrical connection within the same distance. For gas appliances, a 13 amp supply is required within that all-important 1.5 metres of your new appliance’s location.

Ease of Access

By making sure all routes are clear in your home, whether that’s ensuring the stairs are clear or all hallways have enough room for the engineers and appliance to manoeuvre through, you can save a lot of time and hassle for both you and the fitters. With regards to the exact space your new appliance will be located, there needs to be sufficient space both at the sides and behind the appliance to allow for ventilation.

Safety

There must not be any combustible materials behind the cooker, and there also must be no power points, alarm sensors or switches directly above it. Anything that is flammable near your appliance obviously presents a huge danger to you and those around you when your cooker is in use.
